Online English Classes

Online English Classes

Studying English online is a new teaching method - maybe you are not sure how it can work. "http://www.onlineenglishteacher.com" offers classes by Skype, so how does it work?

Audio

Skype is used for audio, because of its simplicity and effectiveness - also a high quality microphone is normally used to provide high quality audio.

Audio Recording

In the classes, an audio recording programme is used so that students can listen again and is then uploaded to the website afterwards for students to listen to again.

screen-sharing

A screen-sharing programme is used in the classes, so that students can view the teacher's screen.

Screen-marker

A screen-marker is used in the classes, so that students can see the teacher marking their screen with annotations.

Homework

English homework can be done by e-mail, where students can send it in by e-mail for correction.

Topics

Many different topics can be done, such as business English or exams like CAE, IELTS etc..

Skype English

Skype English

Have you used Skype before? Skype is a programme used for speaking with people like a telephone, but instead using a computer and headset/microphone. The great thing about Skype is that it is free to use, other than of course the normal payment for using your computer/internet.

Download Skype

You can download Skype from http://www.skype.com. Once you have downloaded it, you can get an ID, again for free, which is like a telephone number for  Skype.

Internet Speed

Of course, you will need an internet connection with reasonable speed to speak on Skype - if your internet is sometimes very slow etc., you might have problems.

Headset/microphone + Webcam

You will also need a headset/microphone for using Skype. They can be bought from a shop or online - best is to ask around - alternatively, your laptop might have a microphone and speakers, however webcam mics might not be so good.

Finding People

Once you have a Skype ID setup and running on your computer, you can find people's IDs by searching for the e-mails, or maybe they have given you the information also.

Online English Classes

Another feature of Skype, is that you can have online English classes, using Skype. If you are interested in those, you can visit: "http://www.onlineenglishteacher.com/skype-classes".

Learning English

Learning English

Learning English is a complex task, where people must learn not only mental information, but also physical skills as well. For example, if people do not normally make a sound in their native language, they must learn how to do this.

English grammar

grammar is very useful to learn - however, some grammar can be quite technical - it is not necessary to learn everything - try to make a foundation of basic grammar that you need and build from there.

English listening

English listening can be developed by listening to many different types of audio - try to listen to different varieties.

English reading

Try reading items that you already know about in your own language. If you learn new words, try to learn them if important.

English speaking

Try speaking as much as possible in English - also recording by yourself can even be useful for analysis

English vocabulary

Try learning English vocabulary systematically and if possible test yourself on what you have learned regularly. Do not try to learn everything - focus on the basics first of all.

English writing

English writing is useful to do, if you can get it checked by a native speaker.

IELTS Exam Overview

The IELTS stands for the "International English Language Testing System" exam. It is divided I.T. Academic and General and there are listening, reading, writing and speaking sections. You can also discuss more information in the free IELTS forum.

Academic/general IELTS

The IELTS exam has two options, firstly, the academic IELTS and secondly the general IELTS exams. The academic IELTS exam may be used mostly for univeristy entrance etc., whilst the general IELTS for immigration and other such purposes.

IELTS Grade

The IELTS grade can be from 0 up to 9, where 9 is the highest grade. Also, the academic IELTS is harder than the general IELTS.

IELTS listening

The IELTS listening section is 40 minutes and consists of 30 minutes where a recording is played and 10 minutes is given to transfer your answers to the answer sheet.

IELTS reading

For the academic IELTS, there are three reading sections and data is from books, magazines, etc.. For the general IELTS, the data is from information that candidates might find daily.

IELTS speaking

The IELTS speaking consists of 3 tasks. The first task, is a warm-up activity where the examiner asks general questions. The second task involves the candidate being given a piece of paper with topic questions to prepare for speaking for 1-2 minutes. The third task is follow-up questions.

Learning English Vocabulary

Learning English vocabulary

Learning English vocabulary is an important factor in success for studying English. With better vocabulary and understanding of root words etc., one can not only improve production of English, but understand the English of other people better as well. When you are learning, try to have several things in mind.

Important English vocabulary

The first thing to realise, is that there are many words that are possible to learn - too many to really know well. Therefore, it is important to focus on what is most important and not try to learn "1 million words" - native speakers do not know them all either.

Record Of The New English Vocbabulary

When one learn the English vocabulary, try to make sure to keep a record of it. For example a book might be useful, but better yet, might be a computer programme for remembering vocabulary.

Test Your Knoweldge Of The English vocabulary

It is useful to test your knowledge of the learned English vocabulary regularly. Again, having a software programme can be useful for this - try to do it periodically, so that you do not miss any words for an extended period of time.

Use The English vocabulary

Try using the English vocabulary regularly. This is one way to remember the vocabulary best. For example, with a post-it note, you can try to put recent English vocabulary on your computer and then use the new English words, where appropriate, in your e-mails etc..

Review Learned English vocabulary

Until you become confident in using new words, try to reveiew them regularly. Some you might find less important, but for more important items, try to reveiew them until learned properly.

Useful English Websites PDF E-mail

Useful English Websites

The internet has a plethora of useful English websites. So, which ones are most useful - well the first thing to say, is that whatever useful websites one person knows, there will be numerous others that one does not know. One thing of course to be careful of, is that the websites that you look at are of high quality and most seem to be, albeit having less detail than academic English books. Here is a  look at a few of them.

EnglishClub.com

This is a great English resource and has numerous topics covered. One of the main benefits of this website, is that it is free, although it does have a lot of advertising and sometimes the organisation can be quite complicated to find all resources - it has a helpful search box to help find things that you might not be able to quickly locate manually.

UsingEnglish.com

This website has numerous tests to help you see your learning English ability - you can apparently register for more resources and like EnglishClub.com, it is mostly/all free and again has advertising. Both EnglishClub.com and UsingEnglish.com have large forums to help.

BBC.co.UK

The BBC has a huge resource, although it is quite hard to navigate - perhaps one method to find what your are interested in, is to google "BBC English grammar/BBC English pronunciation" etc., to find the area that you are most interested. The pronunciation area of the website with its videos is really great.

EuroNews.net

This website is another great one, with videos and transcripts (although they might not completely reflect the dialogue spoken). In addtion, it can be translated for other major languages.

ESL-Lab.com

This website has numerous tests that you can do to practice listening skills etc..

This is just a brief summary - if you know of any how about letting people know at: "http://www.onlineenglishteacher.com/Forum/student-articles/16-useful-english-websites"?{mos_fb_discuss:560}

Which Different Ways Are There For Learning English?

There are many ways to learn English - here is an overview of some of them.

Skype English Classes

A new method of studying online, is by using Skype classes. Advantages include not having to travel and using advanced learning techniques. Disadvantages include sometimes having problems with the internet or electricity.a

Traditional English Study

Traditional English study has been proved and tested - however, a lot can depend on the skills of the teachers and the level or resources avaialable - though this might be quickly changing. Therefore, if for example a teacher only has a whiteboard, they would have to compensate with superior teaching.

English Self-study

Self-studying English can be a useful method of learning English and you can more easily concentrate on areas that are of interest and even use software programmes etc.. On the other hand, a skilled teacher might be able to have a faster method.
